This gift that keeps on giving!.....& recycling

Just when you thought this campus couldn't get much better, the awesome people at Housing and Dining went ahead and bought gifts for all on-campus residents!

The best thing about this item... you will get a lot of use out of it. SO WHAT IS IT?!
YAY! YOUR VERY OWN UCSD RECYCLE BAG!

Each resident has their own, it's washable (rinseable), and it helps UCSD meet its ZERO WASTE goal!

You can put all recyclable items in this bag, and take it to your nearest recycle dumpster or down the hall to the recycle shoot (if you're a Villager).
; ) Not sure what to recycle? They've got you covered.

There's a complete list of all possible items to recycle, as well as items that can't go in the recycling bins on campus.

P.S. See the big plastic bag stuffed with contents in the background of this pic? My roomies and I improvised by using that before we got the recycle bags. We still use it as our community recycle bag, and just empty the recyclables and reuse the bag.
So when you don't have your very own recycle bag provided to you, get creative! IT'S EASY BEING GREEN.

Non-recyclables include hazardous waste aka e-waste, such as microwaves, cell phones, batteries, and light bulbs. Trash, styrofoam, and plastic bags won't work either.

The bag even gives a shout-out to Toby's Spots. Please use Toby's Spots, residents! They're there for YOUR convenience. : )

One last super feature that I absolutely love is...the handle on the bottom of the bag, so you can easily dump out its contents. Sweet!

Happy recycling!

Please let me know if you, your res hall, or your building has not received RECYCLE BAGS yet. I will be happy to make that happen for you. : )

Rainy Days

So finals have started, and even the sky cries... which just makes us students even more miserable, not to mention cold and wet.

Yet, one of the great comforts to cold weather is warm drinks, cozy chairs and hot food.

Warm, good drinks:

Mexican Mocha: cinnamon, steamed milk, chocolate, and Espresso
Hammerhead: espresso and coffee
Hot Chocolate: classic chocolate and milk/water

Cozy Chairs:

My favorite chair to curl up on is in Canyon Vista, it also has a nice sized coffee table for plates, papers and such.
Roger's has a nice couch and a big screen TV.

Hot Food:

Soup! The best is tied with Foodworx and Cafe V, the second best is at Plaza.
Pasta! The best is at OVT, and the Cafe V.

Study Snacks

Hello all!

We hope this week is going smoothly for you... with finals coming up and all. I recommend a nice treat to make the day better and studying more pleasant (yes, it is possible). I suggest a nice snack and beverage to go along with it. My favorite snack is a vegan cookie made by Alternative Baking Company that can be purchased from markets like Earl's Place. I really enjoy Explosive Espresso Chip Cookie.. sounds amazing right? Look at a photo:

To down the cookie down, I suggest a delicious beverage called kombucha. G.T.'s Kombucha sold on campus is a living culture of beneficial microorganisms.. Check out Hilary's blog post "Kombucha!" for more information about this fabulous body fuel. Check out a photo of one of my favorite types of Kombucha:

Another fabulous beverage you can enjoy purchasing and consuming from market places on campus is fair trade tea!

When you buy Fair Trade, you participate in a social movement that empowers hard working people in developing countries who dedicate their lives to filling sweetening your tea, brewing your coffee, and keeping you caffeinated for your all nighters.

Dining Services is committed to supporting Fair Trade. Beginning in June 2009, all HDH dining locations started offering Fair Trade coffee, tea and sugar exclusively. There are also Fair Trade choices of ice cream and chocolate.

What does Fair Trade mean?

  • Paying farmers a living wage for their harvest.
  • Creating direct trade links to farmers and their cooperatives.
  • Providing access to affordable credit, helping farmers stay out of debt to local middlemen.
  • Promoting sustainable practices such as organic and shade-grown farming, that help protect the environment.
  • Fair Trade coffee comes from farmers who have been certified and receive a minimum price for their harvest.

Feel free to become a fan of HDH on Facebook. They might have just the right information you are looking for.

Best of wishes studying for finals. And please remember, snacking can be a very important part of your success in studying as it provides fuel for your body. When consumed properly, a proper snack and beverage can accommodate just the right energy you need!

Happy days,
Jessica

Soy milk has grown on me!

Has milk been a part of your diet for most of your life? Same here!

I drank milk for the longest time, and decided to try something different. Actually it was a combination of that reason, and that someone told me that at my age, milk doesn't necessarily benefit my health. : ) Since I knew I could get my calcium from other sources, I decided to give soy milk a chance.

I was hesitant at first because I expected that it wouldn't match the taste of ice cold milk. I was right! It doesn't. That's because it's made from soybeans.

It has its own unique flavor that's still smooth and refreshing. In my opinion, it has a lighter taste than milk, which I like.So I found a yummy replacement that also acts as a great source of protein.

I was just happy I didn't have to kick my late night cereal-for-dinner habit. :)

You can find the Silk brand of soy milk at Place and Markets in The Village, Roger's, and Goody's.

Perhaps you can try it as a substitute ingredient, while baking cookies, or just as a complement to oatmeal and cereal.Since the holidays are coming up, use soy milk in your favorite hot beverage, such as coffee or hot cocoa. Yum!

Let me know how your recipe turns out if you choose to use soy milk.

I use soy milk in moderation though because it's not the end-all perfect source of protein. I try to mix up my diet with different sources of nutrients from different foods.

If you're interested in the debate on whether soy is as beneficial a product as it's marketed to be, check out these links:

http://vegetarian.about.com/od/vegetarianvegan101/f/MilkSubstitutes.htm

The first one praises the benefits of soy, while the second link hosts a forum for discussion on soy as part of our diets.

I would love to hear your feedback on these links, or any of your personal findings and opinions on the subject.Live well.
