Earth Week adventures!

Hey Tritons,

Earth Week has been a good time!
I ventured over to the Marshall Lowers last weekend (Sun. April 18th) to check out the cool trial run of the laundry racks being funded by HDH's very own Green Grants! woohoo

The lovely interns from Green Campus, Susan Kram and Jennifer Hull, had the event at Marshall RA, Jennifer Truong's apartment.

The event was a success, as residents from six Marshall apartments came by to collect their laundry racks. Two racks were designated per apartment, and by the end of the quarter, the Green Campus reps will send the recipients a survey asking for feedback regarding their experience using the racks. This is just another great way that HDH is helping to fund the many ways UCSD students want to green the campus, and impact the lives of their peers.

In other news, in case you guys missed it, there was a massive trash sort in Town Square this last Monday (April 19th) stemming from UCSD's Recyclemania results.

Videos: UCSD kicked off its annual Earth Week festivities with students digging through more than 1,000 pounds of trash to demonstrate how much could have been recycled.

The photo below is the aftermath of the sort.
Krista Mays, Truman Mak, and Kimberly Tran took a breather after an intense day that lasted from before 8am until after 12pm.
We collected bag after bag of recyclable material from the trash sort as seen here in the blue bags by Truman's feet.
I was proud to represent The Village, being that they placed first out of all six colleges, with a Recyclemania waste diversion rate of 31%.

The Earth Day pre-party went down today in Price Center East! The EcoNauts were out celebrating the Earth, while rockin our tye-dye Ts and "EcoNaut Approved" tats.

We had bubbles, face paint, temporary tattoos, and Recyclemania results!! woohoo
If you guys happened to be at any of these events, tell me what you thought of them!

See you at Muirstock!....Fri, April 23rd, Muir Quad, 2-5pm!

Happy Earth Week!

RECYCLEMANIA is ON at UCSD and ACROSS the NATION!

It's going on now! Here is an excerpt from the website: http://recyclemaniacs.org/index.htm

"Sunday, January 17th marks the beginning of the 2010 competition. Runs until March 27th!

Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more."

WHEN THE WASTE IS COLLECTED, THE AMOUNT IS COMPARED TO OTHER SCHOOLS AND RECORDED EVERY WEEK!

Here's the latest update from the website...

"RecycleMania Passes Halfway Point: The 2010 RecycleMania is off to another great start with over 600 colleges and universities participating across the United States, Canada and as far away as Qatar. With each bottle or piece of paper they place in a recycling bin, over 5 million students and 1.3 million staff and faculty are participating in this year’s competition. To see the full list of colleges and learn more about each, visit the Participating Schools section and click on specific school’s names to see their profile."

Just to reiterate, all this info can be found at http://recyclemaniacs.org/index.htm !

Woohoo! It's on Tritons : )

Step up to the challenge!

Composting: The Scoop

So I have heard so many things from students about Housing-Dining-Hospitality’s Composting program:

“We have one…?”

“Its not real they throw it away…”

“I never see the signs…”

“No meat or bones…”

And so, so much more…

Well here is the deal about Housing-Dining-Hospitality composting…

Yes, we do have one. Participate! Make it better!

It has been being thrown away with the trash –wait, don’t start yelling yet!- there are reasons for that.

1. There wasn’t enough room for UCSD to start the program at the Miramar landfill; they didn’t have enough room for the amount of compost we would bring in yet.

2. The compost had to be relatively clean of non-compostable materials, so we had to get you students use to not throwing other stuff in there. It’s got to be clean healthy compost material! =]

BUT we will be starting at the Miramar Landfill in November. It’s the real deal people, so be prepared!

If you don’t see the signs ask the people working in the dish area! They will be more than glad to help you. (Ask and you so shall receive!)

Everything on your plate can be composted! The meat, the cheese, the fish, the pasta, the sauce, the syrup, the salad, the dirty napkins, the straws, the cups, the soup containers, the plates, the containers, the wrap papers… all of it. Ain’t it great?

Composting. Do it.

Oh, by the way, for all the people who asked, Recycle-Mania is from January to April. Be prepared to make your college the best!
