Take Care of Yourself : ) Your Health Comes FIRST

Hey it's *Hilary...

There's no better time than NOW to take care of yourself. If you're feeling stressed, hit the gym, do some laps in the pool, or take a stroll on the beach. Honestly, there has never been a time that I regretted working out. It'll give you that little extra boost before that next study sesh.

Lookin to jump start your study snacks?

Check out these tips from Becky McDivitt, our registered dietician : )

Eating Strategies
  1. Eat small, frequent meals to stay alert and energized.
  2. Don’t skip meals due to marathon study sessions!
  3. Have healthy snacks like these ready for study breaks:
    • Nuts and dried fruit
    • Cheese sticks and yogurt
    • Sliced veggies and dip or hummus
    • Fresh fruit
    • Low fat popcorn
    • Half-sandwich
  4. Eat your snack away from your study area. Avoid mindless snacking while studying.
  5. Stay hydrated with water, tea, milk or small amounts of 100% juice.
  6. Manage stress with non-eating activities like exercise, meditation, yoga, talking with friends, and watching a movie.
  7. Don’t over-do it with caffeine in an effort to stay awake. If your body is telling you to sleep, you need to sleep! Well-rested students perform better on tests.

Stay classy San Diego.

HEALTH=HAPPINESS -->Talk to Becky this Spring!

Hey Tritons,

I have done a lot of experimenting during my first year as a Transfer student.
.....I'm talkin about food!

You know the expression "starving student"? Well honestly, I couldn't ask for a better place to be one than at UCSD. There are sooooo many healthy ingredients in the P+Ms, and opportunities to eat healthy meals in the dining restaurants on-campus.

If you don't know about your options, and want to empower yourself, hang out with professional Registered Dietitian: HDH’s RD Becky McDivitt this Spring.

"You’ll see a lot of her around campus for RD in da House program, when she visits Dining restaurants to chat, introduce healthy snacks, and offer nutritional advice."

You can meet Becky at these events:

RD in da House / Spring Quarter
May 13 - Café V
June 2 - Canyon Vista

Time: 11am - 1pm

If you don't personally have any questions for Becky, please spread this news to people you know and care about.

"College is not just about grades, or experience, or any of that "security" stuff, it is about people." -Jessica Baltmanas

RD in da House!

Greetings!

So I've been in contact with Becky McDivitt, our local RD in da House (Registered Dietitian). And she is pretty much one of the most awesome people on staff. She can help any of you with your dietary needs and nutrition, and you can come to her to offer suggestions for various food options.

Here is her website so you can check out her credentials:http://hdh.ucsd.edu/diningservices/nutrition.asp
And here is her email to get in touch with her: rmcdivitt@ucsd.edu
And here is her picture:

Don't gain the freshman 15, work with Becky and you'll be lookin' fine!

As a vegan, I've been working closely with her to try to get more vegan options established at Canyon Vista (my local dining hall). And she gave me some close contacts to offer suggestions to the staff there. At the bottom is a list of names of the management of Canyon Vista Restaurant for all of you who want to offer a helpful hint or even share concern you have and a way to make it better, of course. The staff is there for YOU! To better your college eating experience, and to offer quality food for fuel. Take advantage of it, and take advantage of the wonderful opportunity you have to meet with a dietitian, especially one as cool as Becky.

Speak with a manager on duty to make a special request. At Canyon Vista... Scott Spangler (the senior manager), Mark Azhocar (chef), Nancy Thompson (senior cook), Peter Maxwell (some evenings) or Tom Jones (front of the house manager.)

Shoot me an email if you want the names of staff in other dining halls.

Until next time :-) ,
